Understanding Your Health Plan

Health insurance has a few key cost-sharing concepts. Here's what they mean for you.

πŸ’³

Premium

The monthly amount you pay for your health insurance, regardless of whether you use it or not.

🎚️

Deductible

The amount you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance starts covering costs (beyond preventive care).

βš–οΈ

Coinsurance

After your deductible, you share costs with the insurer β€” e.g., 80% insurer / 20% you β€” until your out-of-pocket max.

πŸ›‘

Out-of-Pocket Max

The most you'll pay in a plan year. After you hit this limit, your insurer covers 100% of covered services.

Health Insurance Questions

You can enroll during the annual Open Enrollment Period (typically November–January). You can also enroll during a Special Enrollment Period if you have a qualifying life event β€” job loss, marriage, birth of a child, move to a new area, etc.

The best time is during your 6-month open enrollment window that begins when you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare Part B. During this window, you cannot be denied coverage or charged higher premiums due to health conditions.

No β€” employer-paid health insurance premiums are generally not included in your taxable income. The employer can deduct the premiums as a business expense, and they are tax-free to you as an employee.

COBRA allows you to continue your group health coverage after leaving a job. It typically lasts up to 18 months (36 months for disability, divorce, or dependents). You pay the full premium (employer + employee share) plus a 2% admin fee.
